Uruguay launches its digital nomad visa

It's probably a destination that wouldn't be our first choice, and yet it's expected to become a popular destination in the years to come. A special digital nomad visa was launched very recently, and you will discover it, but the process to obtain it is one of the simplest.

After Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador and Brazil, Uruguay joins its neighboring countries with the launch of a new visa. It is a country that is preparing to welcome future digital nomads. It was revealed that the process and requirements for obtaining this visa would be the easiest.

Conditions required to obtain the visa

This visa can be requested for one main reason: you must be able to prove that you work for a company located in your country of origin. You can be an employee, or even self-employed, as long as you have the possibility of working remotely from Uruguay. The duration of this temporary residence permit can range from 6 months to 1 year, and this can be renewed.

To be eligible, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Valid passport
  • Work abroad : you can be an employee, self-employed or manager of a company located outside Uruguay
  • Have a clean criminal record
  • Earn a decent income to meet your needs on site

After gathering all these requirements, you can go ahead and apply for a visa to obtain approval to travel to Uruguay. The process can be carried out entirely online, via the official portal. Creating an account is necessary to subsequently complete the application form.

Two documents will need to be downloaded and included in your application: a copy of your passport as well as a certificate attesting that you work remotely and that you earn enough money to meet your needs.

The fee for a visa application is 10 USD. Namely, payment must be made with a credit or debit card issued by a Uruguayan bank. It is advisable to visit a local store and present confirmation of your visa application in order to make payment. The processing time can be around 10 days, the temporary residence permit is sent by email.

If you are traveling with your spouse or dependents, a visa application for each traveler must be completed independently. A form for each person must be completed; it is not possible to make a group request.

Choosing Uruguay for your next destination

This can be an interesting destination to discover South America. If you are a fan of teleworking abroad, this could be an opportunity to discover several countries in South America. Colombia, Brazil and Mexico also offer visas for digital nomads. Uruguay is gradually developing on the international scene, it is still a little-known country for tourism. The experience can therefore be exclusive and unique.

Several advantages offered by Uruguay should be taken into account. The process of obtaining a visa is made easier, the cost of living is quite low and the authorities do not tax temporary residents on your income. Currently, you should not be required to pay income tax. The wifi network is also very reliable.

In addition to the numerous professional opportunities, the living environment is pleasant. Its gastronomy, its reliefs, its authenticity and its Hispanic culture should please you.
