Czech Republic introduces digital nomad visa

Recently launched in July 2023, this new visa is aimed at digital nomads. By this we mean all freelancers and employees who can work remotely, while maintaining their job in their country of origin.                   

Why the launch of this new visa?

Indeed, the Czech Republic wishes to stimulate the country's economy by welcoming highly qualified professionals. All digital nomads are eligible for this new visa. Professionals with a specialty in IT are highly sought-after profiles. Unlike the previous Zivno business visa, this new feature allows future digital nomads to settle in the country for a long stay. 

Which nationalities are covered by this visa?

The following eight nationalities can apply for a Zivno visa: Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States. 

The particularities of the digital nomad visa

Conditions for obtaining a visa 

The visa offers future travelers a fast-track path to a long-term stay. This visa allows a digital nomad to live for up to 1 year in the Czech Republic, while maintaining their job from their country of origin. To obtain it, the price is 2,500 CZK, or €104. You have the possibility of obtaining a residence permit afterwards, if you wish to live there for 2 additional years. An adaptation-integration course must be followed if you wish, in the long term, to obtain resident status. 

Regarding the candidate

  • The candidate must hold a university degree or higher in science, technology, engineering, computer science or have three years of professional experience in the IT sector. 
  • Be employed in a foreign company, and outside the Czech Republic, with a workforce of at least 50 employees. 
  • Receive an income of at least 60,530 CZK, or €2,507 per month
  • Spouses, partners, or dependent children of the candidate can obtain a residence permit when the candidate applies for the digital nomad visa

The documents to be provided upon request are as follows: passport valid for at least 3 months after the expiry of your visa as well as 2 blank pages in your passport, international health insurance as well as a clean record 

To submit your application and documents, you must go in person to a Czech embassy or consulate in your country of residence. 

Tax status 

If you stay more than 183 days in a period of 1 year, you will be considered a Czech tax resident. 

Becoming a digital nomad in the Czech Republic as a European

A national of a member country of the European Union, including the Czech Republic, can travel during the entire period of validity of their travel document. The passport or nationality identity card are eligible travel documents. To avoid any inconvenience, it is necessary that your travel document is valid for the entire duration of your stay, in the event of checks. There is therefore no visa required for European nationals. 

Is the Czech Republic a country for a digital nomad?

It is a country that appears in the top 10 of the best destinations to become a digital nomad. This is mainly explained by the affordable cost of living and by the offers proposed regarding the apartment rentals. The journey can also be an advantage, especially with the low costs of train or plane tickets. It is a destination that is very well served from Europe in particular. Prague, is a lively and nocturnal city. It is a cultural and green city, with many museums, galleries and national parks.
