The Japanese government is following the trend and considering introducing a digital nomad visa

Could Japan be the next destination to launch a teleworking visa for digital nomads? Currently, the visa is not yet up to date. However, the government is starting to talk about it, because the procedures concerning the conditions of entry into the territory as well as the status of permanent resident are subjects discussed.

In recent months, we have heard a lot about digital nomadism, particularly following the various European and global countries which have facilitated entry conditions into the territory for digital nomads. Today, countries are developing and working on the best possible organization, with the aim of welcoming future travelers to settle for a specific period of time. The visa issue is the first step to take to make your project a reality. Japan should follow the trend very soon and open its borders to new traveler profiles.

A project in development

Unlike some countries, Japan has a well-defined project. The conditions of entry into the territory, and therefore the visa, should make it possible to create an atmosphere for highly skilled workers to settle in the country. Welcoming new international travelers is the primary goal for Japan, as authorities are currently working on an action plan to bring the number of foreign visitors back to pre-pandemic levels. The visa process and permanent resident status are points under development.

Current formalities for entering Japan

To date, Japan has a visa waiver agreement with 69 countries and territories around the world. If your nationality is affected by this agreement, the authorized length of stay is 90 days.

To work for more than 90 days, obtaining a work visa is necessary. To be eligible, you must be able to prove that you have visited the offices of a company in Japan and received a salary from the same company. For some travelers, this visa is necessary and it remains relevant because you are traveling to the territory for a specific period, which can be more than 90 days.

The importance of the digital nomad visa will allow travelers to settle in for a longer period. The duration of the visa has not yet been announced, but it will allow you to stay longer than 90 days. This visa is aimed at digital nomads, employees or freelancers who work for a company in their country of origin, but whose professional missions can be carried out remotely.

Japan can become a major destination for teleworking abroad. At the origin of several global innovations, it is an attractive and dynamic country which could interest many future travelers. The lifestyle, local culture and tourism must be taken into account. Indeed, Japan is a mix of ancestral traditions and modernity. It can be a unique and original experience from these two aspects.

So, stay tuned to find out more about this new project.
